Red Elfcup

Red Elfcup

I came across these elfcups when out for a walk on Sunday afternoon. They stand out as vivid flashes of red amongst the mosses, growing on and consuming dead wood.

There are two species of elfcup found in Britain, and they cannot be distinguished except by an expert mycologist with a microscope, which I am definitely not. To find out more about Sarcoscypha coccinea, the Ruby Elfcup and Sarcoscypha austriaca, the Scarlet Elfcup, follow this link.
